Sometimes We Forget to Say Thanks!

Twenty-five years ago I was faced with sharing the truth or ending my life.  That sounds like a profound comment, but it’s the truth.  For all the good choices that I had made in my life, the truth was I had also created an illusion – the truth of which – when A Prayer of Thanksrevealed would change my life.

In my first book – Second Chances – I share openly about my past, my unethical choices and the consequences that followed.  What I didn’t share was the truth behind all of those people who saw more in me than I saw in myself at the time.

A Thanksgiving Perspective – What if?

It’s the day before Thanksgiving and all through my mind I’m wondering “what-if” – what if we had a different perspective on life and all that we have to be thankful for?  This is my Thanksgiving perspective cause I wonder if!

ThanksgivingI wonder for example – what if we were less consumer driven and more focused on gratitude?

I wonder what would happen if Thanksgiving day were a paid holiday for every employee and that no one worked on Thanksgiving day?  Wonder if employees would feel valued and be thankful that employers were not open for business?

I saw, the other day, an announcement that McDonald’s was open 24 hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas days.  Wonder if that is necessary?

You Always have a Choice!

You always have a choice quote.

You always have a choice quote.

You always have a choice. The other day a person came up to me at a presentation and shared a situation they were in and found confounding.  They felt like they were cornered with no way out.  Their choices seemed limited.  But You always have a Choice.

Challenged with something formidable, it’s important to remind ourselves we always have a choice.

No!  I didn’t say that the choice you have is easy or will make things comfortable…that is not true.  But it is true we always have a choice.  And every choice we make has a consequence.  If you wish to live a healthy and productive life, then it’s important to make choices that are positively impactful for you.

Life Better than Imagined!

Sometimes life just doesn’t seem to turn out like we might desire.  The question is – is it possible that what we see as bad creates for us a life better than imagined?

Life Better Than Imagined

Life Better than Imagined.

External circumstances cause us experience things we never anticipated.  We blame things beyond our control…and some are.  Yet, if we’re truly honest with ourselves, the choices we make in life certainly contribute to how life turns out. It’s easy to look outward and wonder why.

What happens though when time passes.  What we thought were times and experiences that we believed to be less than desirable in many cases create a life better than what we imagine.

An Ethical Truth – Every Choice has a Consequence!

Twenty-six years ago I made a choice. At the time it seemed so simple and insignificant. I sat there with three questions as I pondered the “opportunity”: Who would know? Who would care? And the cost – what cost? Little did I know at the time that every, literally every choice has a consequence. That is a universal truthlaw – a spiritual law – that governs us all…just like gravity.

Anyone that knew me, at the time, would have said that I was basically an honest and ethical person. I was respected in my community, a community and civic leader, active in my church, serving as music director. No one, not even I, would have suspected that ten years later that I would be an inmate in Federal Prison.

Best Buy’s Chief Ethics Officer Kathleen Edmond’s blog hacked! It happens to the best of us…

Two days ago I see a blog entry by Kathleen Edmond, Chief Ethics Officer for Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) and I called my Director of Operations to see if we could make contact for an interview with Ms. Edmond for my blog…little did I know that two days later she and I would be bonded by the same event – hacking!  Several weeks ago I found it difficult to access my site and after a phone call or two found that my site had been hacked.  Now, honestly, I can kinda understand someone finding it a challenge to hack an officer of Best Buy’s site, but mine?  What was there to gain?  But then again, to us all…it is important to take our roles seriously and precautions appropriately.

Forget Ethical Lapses? Tiger Woods Winning Erases All or Does It?

Does Winning really take care of Everything? Perhaps a better question to ask is this: “Do the consequences of ethical lapses dissipate if you find yourself on a winning streak?”

Ethics in the workplace and in our lives is a serious matter, something as a business ethics speaker I deal with daily. The current controversy over the new Tiger Woods ad by Nike is just one example of the connection between ethics, winning and success.

Tiger WoodsHaven’t heard about the ad? In an article for CNN (March 27, 2013) by Michael Martinez entitled: “Can winning really take care of everything in Tiger Woods’ troubled life?” The sports marketing, ethical experts and consumers of sporting goods are lined up on both sides of the issue with both angry and forgiving viewpoints.
