The Strange Ethics of Airline Security

It has happened yet again. Airline security has been breached, and it had nothing to do with the passengers. The latest case of a security breakdown has occurred overseas to an airline called JetStar.

The airline worker was caught on video as he was opening passenger bags in the luggage holds of an airliner that was about to depart. He was stealing the contents. The airline upon seeing the video vowed a full investigation.  This is airline security gone wrong – clearly an ethics breach.  A spokesperson said in part:

“We have launched an immediate investigation and will work with Airports of Thailand, our ground handler BAGS and our local security company to ensure the security of our customers’ property on-board our flights,” the statement continued.

The Ethical World of Halloween Political Correctness

Who controls what is “correct,” and who doesn’t? The politics of political correctness has even reached its tentacles into the celebration of Halloween. It is an issue outside of what we normally discuss, but I believe it has ramifications into our everyday ethical life.  Halloween political correctness in an ethics blog – go figure!

halloween-political-correctnessIn the latest politically correct salvo, the University of Florida is actually offering psychological counseling for any students who are offended by Halloween costumes.  Seriously – this is Halloween political correctness taken to an absurd level.

In a blog written by the university last week it stated:

Five Insights to Help You Overcome Adversity

In our lives we all face adversity. It isn’t that adversity occurs, it is how we approach and overcome adversity when it arrives. Changing the way we approach adversity, changes the way we live our lives and the positive outcomes that can follow. These five insights to overcome adversity will change your life.

Overcome AdversityWhen I went into federal prison for making the choices to embezzle money from my clients, I didn’t fully understand adversity. I grew up in a single parent home. My mother dearly loved me and always told me I could be “somebody”. That was my focus. I completed a Masters Degree in accounting and as a young man, I was a partner in a prestigious accounting firm. When my life got out of balance financially my approach to overcoming adversity was to steal money. I did not have a concept of what it means to overcome adversity in a healthy way. I could have made better choices, but the choices I made pushed me further out of balance.

In an article by Matt Hudson from the Billings Gazette we find a “popular Billings accountant” facing federal embezzlement charges which has to cause the business community to ask “Why?”!  To be clear, I do not know Michael Wombolt, but I do know a thing to two about how such a downfall can take place.  I’ve been in his shoes and it’s no pretty.

Michael WomboltHudson’s news report states the following:

Michael Leonard Wombolt was indicted in December on eight counts of wire fraud through his dealings with Harvey Ost Oilfield Services, a Malta company. He’s accused of moving money from the client to his own business accounts and trying to cover the tracks.

CFP Ethics Training – Some Rules Don’t make Sense!

Some years back Barclays contacted me about recording special training for Certified Financial Planners.  They wanted to offer Ethics Training for free through their iShares brand recognizing their commitment to ethical behavior in the financial services arena.  Their thought, provide the “required” training for free – what better way to demonstrate their commitment to ethical CFP Ethics Trainingbehavior.  The project was approved by the appropriate authorities and together we created some pretty dog gone good training – at least that’s the feedback we received.

Great Concept but then something changed and not for the better when it comes to CFP Ethics Training!

While the guiding ethical principles for Certified Financial Planners has not changed, the requirements for who is eligible to present these standards has and that, for me is the rub.
