All Elevators have Cameras – A Business Ethics Minute

By October 1, 2015 No Comments

When faced with an ethical dilemma, do you know what you would do? Have you thought about the consequences of a poor decision?  Perhaps now is the time in this business ethics minute!

business ethics minuteRay Rice, former running back for the Baltimore Ravens, made a bad choice. Although inexcusable, it was meant to be private. But his elevator had a camera. And that changed everything. He went from star football player to the poster child for domestic abuse. One decision led to far-reaching consequences

Stories like his give us food for thought. We may fib a little or fudge the numbers when we think no one’s looking. But a poor choice now, no matter how small, can have big repercussions — and not just for the individual, but in some cases for whole organizations.

What happens behind closed doors these days isn’t guaranteed to stay there. Modern technology and social media mean someone’s always watching. Therefore, we must assume that everything we do is public. From there, we make our choices. If we think about it, that can be a tall order.

Making wise ethical decisions takes practice. I like to call it

Ethical Muscle Memory. Athletes endure rigorous physical training for their sport. They do this so that when the moment comes, they’ll make the play. Their muscles are prepared for the job.

Proper ethical training empowers us to make wise choices. It can show us what to look for, what to avoid, and how to respond when an ethical decision is before us. By working at it, we begin to make the right choice naturally. The cameras aren’t going anywhere. Only we can decide what they see.

Are you willing to train for Ethical Muscle Memory?  Give me a call to discuss my new Virtual Training Platform so that your employees can receive state of the art ethical training that is documented for your organization’s protection.

By the way…just want to say that I’m creating a videoblog that will be available soon.  I’m putting past editions on a memory stick and got a great deal from https://www.usbmemorydirect.com/ – highly recommend them!
