The Twists and Turns of Fraud in Social Work

The Twists and Turns of Fraud in Social WorkAs a keynote speaker of fraud and a fraud consultant and book author, I frequently encounter those who have been scammed or falsely accused. More often than not they will say, “They seemed so authentic or genuine. How could someone make up lies like that?”

In truth, it is easy for them if we accept that the mindset of the fraudster is not directed toward the ethical, but the unethical. When such a person feels they are about to get caught more often than not, they will double-down on the lie rather than to face the consequences.

Robin Niceta, Ex-social Worker

Like it or not, Robin Niceta is going to face trial on August 1, 2023. She falsely accused a Colorado councilwoman of molesting her own 2-year-old son. This, relatively local story, has gotten national legs, as they say, because of Niceta’s ability to twist and turn to ever higher outrageous heights.

The former social worker worked for a county department of human services, and she got angered when the councilwoman, just doing her job, made what Niceta considered sharp criticisms against Niceta’s girlfriend. As it so happens, Niceta’s girlfriend was the former chief of police of Aurora, Colorado.

If you are with me so far, here is where the scandal really gets interesting. Danielle Jurinsky, the councilwoman, was found not guilty of child molestation. Niceta’s accusations (as a social worker the claims of abuse had to be investigated), led Jurinsky to charging Niceta “of influence of a public servant and a misdemeanor for making a false child abuse report.”

Drooling and everything

After being accused, Robin Niceta claimed she could not stand trial because she had brain cancer. And, as the accusations against her piled on, Niceta (with the alleged help of her family) went all-in on backing the diagnosis. She allegedly became increasingly nonverbal, forged medical records from a cancer clinic in New Mexico and even produced brain scan images allegedly lifted from the internet; most probably from Google. On a Zoom call, Niceta even managed to drool on herself.

Allegedly, the scam blew up after a whistleblower called Jurinsky and said she was being tricked. According to a quote by Jurinsky, appearing on Fox News (May 25, 2023):

“[Niceta has been] lying, manipulating and abusing her power for years and years and years, and she thought she conjured up a way to also get past her trial.”

Apparently, the hard part for Jurinsky was convincing the DA to believe her. The case began to take on political ramifications not simply medical. In fact, as the scandal began to receive national attention, hundreds of oncologists and other medical professionals viewed Niceta’s so-called medical reports and said they were faked. In fact, no one can find the so-called oncologist who was treating her. The trial in August should prove somewhat entertaining, albeit a peek into an unethical mind.

The origins

More than a year ago, Jurinsky appeared on radio and defended the police force against the police chief. This enraged Niceta who was at that time dating the police chief (they have since broken-up and the chief wants nothing to do with her). It appears as though the entire origin of this scandal was jealousy.

In another twist, several other families had similar experiences (some say more than a dozen families) and they have filed a class-action lawsuit against the county department of human services. Niceta has been wielding this kind of power apparently without oversight or any checks and balances from her superiors.

This now brings the case around full circle: who is Robin Niceta and what is her need to go after anyone she doesn’t like through their children? More so, why do appointed officials such as the DA defend her actions?

Ethical behavior doesn’t care about political parties or politicians; it cares about what is right, and what is just. Robin Niceta, trying to escape justice by faking brain cancer, may have well ended her career this time. However, she damaged so many in her wake because no one cared enough to check her sense of ethics.
